What does being a member of the board of the NCAA involve?
First, all members of the board are a part of one of the NCAA's committees. We have particular need for five of our committees: 1) the governance committee, which is a great project for nonprofit exec and board members who want to learn more about best practices, 2) the Nimbus, which is fun for people who are passionate about writing and journalism, 3) the book award/admissions committee, which needs people willing to reach out to alum volunteers and high schools across country to promote New College to potential students, 4) the mentor/networking committee, which is a way for us to connect students with alums and alums with alums, and 5) the 50th anniversary committee, which needs people with event-planning abilities to help with our upcoming extravaganza.
Other committees that could use your involvement include the fundraising committee, Student research/travel grants, Alumnae/i Fellows, Website, and Reunions. No matter what your talents or interests are, there is a place for you to contribute meaningfully to the NCAA and New College by being on the board.
NCAA board members are also expected to make an annual donation to New College, to attend at least one of our two annual Sarasota board meetings, and to attend at least one reunion or chapter event annually. What do you do to start?
Send an approximately two hundred word blurb to NCAA stating why you want to be on the board, your goals as a board member would be, your qualifications for the position, and any involvement you've had with the College or NCAA since your graduation.
Your nomination and statement will be due on Monday, June 8, 2009, so please consider whether you're interested in running! We'll announce the candidates in the summer Nimbus and provide information on how to vote electronically and via mail (whichever you prefer). The ballots will be due on September 1, 2009. If you choose to run, you'll probably want to be making phone calls to get out the vote. Finally, we'll announce the new round of board members on October 15, 2009.
How should you get more information?
You've got a bunch of options. First, definitely call or write a current board member. All of us are delighted to talk about our experiences on the board and really want to recruit new talent like you to join us. Second, take a look at back issues of the Nimbus, which are available at www.alum.ncf.edu/nimbus. Looking at the Nimbus is a great way to get a sense of what the NCAA has been up to lately. Third, look at some board core sections of the NCAA Board Handbook under http://alum.ncf.edu/about/board-members. Finally, if you don't already, take a look at the alum website (links at top of page and to your left) as well as the revamped New College of Florida News & Events website. New College has been doing a great job at getting the word out about what's happening on campus, and it's definitely worth viewing.
